Custom Kicks

Before the Industrial Revolution, all shoes were handmade.  In many cultures, shoes represented one’s social status.  Some things have not changed: shoes are still a status symbol today.

New inventions, materials and techniques followed quickly in the twentieth century to the point of mass production.  Factories enabled the production of many shoes at low cost.  However, these shoes lack personality.  This may be the reason we are seeing today a step back into the pre-industrialized era through customizing.

Customized shoes are in

•Customizing is a trend in fashion.  Customizing your shoes is a way of stepping out of the crowd and showing your identity.

•Customized shoes star in hip-hop videos, occupy forums on the Internet, and grace the catwalks. 

    Your canvas will be your shoes:

    You can bring your old flip flops, rubber boots, high tops, sneakers, heels.

Where to begin:

•Start with thumbnail sketches. 

•Think about design elements and principles.

•Prime the surface of your canvas (shoes)

•Sketch your design

•You can ‘tape off’ areas for spray painting.

•Have fun!

•When completed you will design a shoe box for your shoes.
